Anarchists, Anarchism and Anarchy: Some Points of Clarification

This paper is intended as a philosophical introduction to anarchism. As such, it deals with a fundamental question: What is 'anarchism'? There are some who doubt the possibility and/or desirability of answering this question. I will begin by attempting to overcome their doubts. Then I will challenge two prominent (and, in my view, mistaken) answers to the fundamental question: the 'movementarian' answer (which effectively defines 'anarchism' in terms of what anarchists do); and the 'anarchy-ist' answer (which effectively defines 'anarchism' in terms of what anarchists want). I will conclude by offering an alternative answer to the fundamental question.

All welcome!
