Media and Politics in Contemporary Brazil (or how Brazilian media has helped the country of the future to travel 20 years back in time)

This talk will explore the role of mass media in contemporary Brazilian politics, discussing the way in which key political events, such as the 2013 demonstrations in Sao Paulo, the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016, and the Lava Jato (Car Wash) case, have been represented in a variety of media platforms. The talk will discuss social media, television, the film Aquarius (2016, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho) and the Netflix TV series The Mechanism (2018, created by José Padilha and Elena Soarez).
