Lecture: Dr Ivor Timmis

The Centre for Applied Language Studies and School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics are pleased to announce a guest lecture:

Dr Ivor Timmis, Leeds Beckett University, UK.

‘Oh baby, I’ve got that lexical feeling’: corpora, lexis and English Language Teaching: where are we now?

In this talk I will argue that corpus research has led to a reappraisal of both the nature of lexis and the place of lexis in English Language Teaching (ELT). We will discuss some of the ‘products’ of corpus research which have emerged in recent years and which are of potential value to ELT such as word, collocation and phrase frequency lists. We will also look at some of the online resources which exploit this kind of lexical research: such resources, I argue, take the teacher-researcher and autonomous learner into lexical paradise.

Time: Thursday 19th February 1100-1200
Venue: TBA

All are welcome!
