The negotiation of linguistic identities in multilingual families

Dr. Sandra Ballweg is a senior research associate at the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies, Section for Multilingualism, at Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany.  She holds a PhD in second language acquisition with her PhD research focussing on the use of writing portfolios in foreign language instruction. She is the author of Portfolioarbeit im Fremdsprachenunterricht (2015) and co-author of Wie lernt man die Fremdsprache Deutsch? (2013). Her primary areas of research interest include multilingualism, language and identity, foreign language writing, and learner autonomy.
Sandra is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for a three month stay at CALS from April to June 2015 as part of the CALS Visiting Researcher Programme. While at CALS, she is working on a project on the negotiation of linguistic identity in multilingual families. This project aims to provide a deeper and broader understanding of imposed, assumed and negotiated multilingual identities of individuals and of the negotiation processes within families in which two or more languages are spoken.
