Agenda Setting Lecture: The Right Hon. Lady Hale

The School of Law and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Limerick request the pleasure of your company at the annual Agenda Setting Lecture given by The Right Hon. Lady Hale, Deputy President, Supreme Court of the United Kingdom

Diversity in the Judiciary

This is a topic which has not yet been given much attention in Ireland and, due to the current Government's policy of appointing outstanding women to judicial office, gender balance in the Irish Courts has seen a marked improvement in recent years. Many feel that because of this, the issue of diversity does not need to be examined in Ireland. However, the current method of appointing judges essentially gives total discretion to the Government; there is no requirement to consider diversity and no mechanism to ensure that a future government might not undue all of the work which has been done. While gender balance has improved, Irish judges are still a relatively homogeneous group. Furthermore, it has recently been decided that the method of appointing judges in Ireland needs to be reformed and so this is the perfect opportunity to begin a conversation on the merits of judicial diversity in Ireland.

The lecture will be chaired by The Hon. Mr Justice John L. Murray, Justice of the Supreme Court and former Chief Justice of Ireland
