Professor Anthony McElligott - distinguished speaker at #Weimer100

27 February 2019

The 11 February 2019 marked the 100th anniversary of the election by the German National Constituent Assembly in the town of Weimar of Friedrich Ebert to the presidency of the newly-founded republic. To commemorate this occasion, the Office of the German President, the German Bundestag and the Foundation Reichspraesident Friedrich Ebert hosted a three day symposium on Constitutionalism as Culture, commencing with a solemn act in the morning of the 11th in the official residence of President Steinmeier. Professor Anthony McElligott, who is acknowledged as one of the few authorities on the Weimar Republic working outside Germany, was invited to take part in this event. His talk, in the afternoon of the 11th in the Bundestag, was on the role of County Manager and Civil Servant Herbert von Bismarck - the great-nephew of Prince Otto von Bismarck, in resisting the implementation of republican constitutional culture in Pomerania. The photograph shows him at the official reception with former German president, Dr Joachim Gauck.  https://ww.w.ebert-gedenkstaette.de/pb/,Lde/Startseite/Aktuelles+im+Frie...
