On 21 January Dr Karol Mullaney-Dignam presented some of her latest research at ‘A “Great Divide” or a Longer Nineteenth Century: Music, Britain, and the First World War’, an international conference held at the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies, St John’s College, Durham University, UK. Her paper, entitled ‘Cat-gut and car-horns: British parliamentary debates concerning music during the First World War’, focused on controversies surrounding the taxation of ‘luxury’ items, including musical instruments and gramophones, in Britain between 1914 and 1918.
