Prof. Deirdre McGrath

Professor Deirdre McGrath graduated from University College Cork with a degree in Medicine in 1991. She subsequently completed her Specialist Clinical Training in the UK and was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine degree by the University of London in 2002 on the Genetic Predisposition to Granulomatous Lung Diseases. While in the UK she worked as a researcher in renowned centres such as the National Heart & Lung Institute of the Royal Brompton Hospital and the Clinical Genomic Unit of the Imperial College of Science Technology & Medicine and as a substantive Consultant in General & Respiratory Medicine and Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at St Georges University & NHS Trust. She has been awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Professor McGrath was recently appointed as Director of Education to the Graduate Entry Medical School. She is a member of the Medical Council’s Basic Medical Qualification and Supervised Division Workgroups as well as an adviser to the Medical Council on the development of its Pre-registration (Pres) exam. She is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and is a member of the register of expert panellists for the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC). Professor McGrath has established key research interests in medical education particularly in the areas of assessment, professionalism and quality assurance. Additional research interests include aspects of lung immunity and inflammation and the clinical application of medical devices. She is a principal investigator, Centre for Interventions in Inflammation, Infection & Immunity (4I’s), as well as medical adviser to the Optical Fibres Sensors Research Centre (OFSRC) at the University of Limerick
